We’re starting off this week with our newest music picks for the week ending January 11. Some of these have debuted late last year, such as Royals by Lorde, some have been long-awaited by fans like Katy Perry‘s Dark Horse, and many of these are new releases.

Former American Idol Kelly Clarkson treated her fans in Detroit, Michigan to a song that honors one of their finest artists: she did a cover of Eminem’s Oscar-winning 8-Mile song ‘Lose Yourself’. The songstress have been dutifully doling out covers on her current Stronger tour around the US but you could say that this one’s in a class of its own because it is, after all, originally a rap song.
Clarkson likes performing requested songs from her fans and it just so happens that one of them was that of the blonde rapper from Detroit’s composition. Personally, I found her attempt to add as much country tone to the song quite impressive. At times it even sounded more like R&B.
The 30-year-old singer is still currently doing her tour for her 2011 album Stronger. If you’d like to be able to hear more of her covers, you can go over to her website and check if she’s scheduled to perform anywhere near your locale.
