“I, like Solzhenitsyn, believe that words will crush concrete,” said Pussy Riot’s 23-year-old member, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, “We sit in a cage, but we didn’t lose. And the dissidents didn’t lose. Disappearing in psychiatric wards and jails, they convicted the regime.”

While 24-year-old Maria Alekhina said on her final plea, “At Brodsky’s trial, his poems were also dubbed ‘so-called poems’ and weren’t read – just like the witnesses just watched our video on the Internet. I am not afraid of you. You can take away my ‘so-called’ freedom, but you can never take my inner freedom.”

The three members, who also include 29-year-old Yekaterina Samutsevich, have been in jail since early March after being charged of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. The girls performed a song (a “punk prayer”) in Moscow’s “Christ the Savior Cathedral”, which contained lyrics asking the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of its then incumbent President, Vladimir Putin. (Check out the vide of “punk prayer” at the ens of this post).

The defense lawyers are expecting a guilty verdict although they’re hoping to get a more lenient punishment for the girls aside from the three years imprisonment requested by the prosecution.
